Sari Gelin
The Yellow Bride
A lament in motion. The story of a bride parted from her beloved, told through restrained gesture and the weight of silk.

The Company

Co-Directors Shalaleh Rismani & Asal Ahadi
Shalaleh began training in Azerbaijani folk dance at the age of eight, in Iran — where the art form had no public stage. At thirteen, she moved to Canada, and the dance came with her.
What started as one dancer teaching neighbours in Vancouver became a company in 2009. Two years later, Asal Ahadi joined the directorship. Together they grew Chichak from a passion project into a long-standing fixture of British Columbia's cultural dance scene — never quite full-time, always fully committed.
Today, Chichak operates as a resident member of The Dance Centre. The company performs, choreographs, and teaches — bridging traditional Azerbaijani folk with contemporary movement vocabulary and a deep, ongoing investigation of cultural memory through the body.
Shalaleh Rismani formally founds the company after years teaching Azerbaijani folk dance to the Canadian diaspora.
Asal Ahadi joins as co-director. The company expands its repertoire and educational programming.
Headline performance at the Turkic Festival, North Vancouver Shipyards — tradition meets contemporary choreography.
Featured ensemble presenting Sari Gelin, Lezginka, and Drum/Saz Dance — movements from the Land of Fire.
The directors launch a public daily dance challenge — an ongoing experiment in discipline and cultural memory.
Long-standing member of The Dance Centre. Teaching, rehearsing, and collaborating with Zavieh Music Academy.
Selected Works
Each piece is a chapter — pulled from the songbook of Azerbaijan and the Caucasus, then re-staged for contemporary audiences.

The Yellow Bride
A lament in motion. The story of a bride parted from her beloved, told through restrained gesture and the weight of silk.

Warrior's Dance
Fast, precise, fearless. A traditional Caucasian dance of fire and footwork — the body as blade, the floor as drum.

With the instruments
Dancers become musicians. Frame drum and saz fold into the choreography until rhythm and movement are indistinguishable.

The Company & The Classes
Chichak is a working ensemble of dancers from across the diaspora — engineers, students, parents, artists — bound together by weekly rehearsal and a shared love of Azerbaijani movement.
Our open classes run year-round at The Dance Centre in Vancouver. Adults of all experience levels are welcome; a youth track meets on weekends. No prior background in folk dance is required — only curiosity and a willingness to move.

What we hold
Dance connects us. Every rehearsal is a room of belonging.
We bring our whole selves to the floor — and invite the audience to do the same.
Every step is a step many others have taken. We carry it forward.
The rhythm leads. Movement listens.
Bring Chichak to your stage
Chichak books full ensemble performances, intimate duets, and educational workshops year-round. We welcome conversations with presenters, festivals, schools, and community organizations.
